Bernie Vander Weide
October 22, 1929
October 5, 2012
Bernie Vander Weide was called to heaven to be with the Lord on October 5 at the age of 79 in Lakewood, CA. Graduating from then Bellflower Christian High School in 1947, his class was the first to complete all 12 years at our school. His father Henry served on the school board during the school's first years.
Bernie is survived by his bride of 61 years, Grace Luth Vander Weide; son and his wife Gary and Robyn (both VC Class of 1972); granddaughters, Veronica and Victoria; sister and brother, Henrietta Visser and Sid Vander Weide.
Bernie served in the armed forces during the Korean War, and worked for the Dairy Employees Union for over 40 years.
Bernie was a dedicated Christian leader, serving as a deacon and elder at church, and in many ways at Valley Christian Schools, most often quietly behind the scenes, including:
- Member of the Superintendent's Advisory Council
- President of the Alumni Association
- Donor
The family requests donations be made in memory of Bernie Vander Weide to the Valley Christian Elementary School air conditioning upgrade project. The elementary school in Bellflower was the site where Bernie attended our school in the 30s and 40s, so he and Grace have had a special interest in supporting upgrades at that campus.
