Synopsis of Journalism Sacramento Trip
On September 15, 2005,
journalism students Emily De Groot, Christen Greene, Katie Homet and
adviser Sharon Zoetewey attended the Governor’sHealth Summit in
Sacramento as part of a joint project with the PublicMedia Center.
Valley is one of twelve schools to participate incovering the topic of
teen health and nutrition as a way to encourageother schools to do
likewise.
At the Summit, the students participated in a
kilometer walk withGovernor Schwarzenegger, Maria Shriver, and Lance
Armstrong along withhundreds of Sacramento area school children. After
the walk, thestudent journalists listened to lectures by various health
officialsand doctors. Students also met with the Secretary of Health
forCalifornia at a press conference set up for the student
journalists. The afternoon concluded with a talk by Dr.Phil.
Throughout
the day, the students received information for futurearticles so Valley
can incorporate the topic of health into our studentpublication,
Cross+Section. As part of our participation, we willdedicate space in
Cross+Section to the topic of teen health, and in thespring we will be
part of a presentation at the National JournalismEducators Association
Convention in San Francisco. Cross+Section willalso be featured on a
website along with the other participatingschools, to highlight the
joint project.
