    Board of Directors: Thanks to those who attended the VC Annual Society Meeting last Thursday, 4/20.  The following board members were elected to 3 year terms:  Jeff Westra, Ray Perez, Hector Montenegro, and Kim Bouma. 
    Robotics Mentors Needed: If you would like to get involved in providing mentoring support to our team through your skills in welding, business, computers, engineering, CAD, CNC, programming, milling, or 3D printing, please contact or 562-243-2721.     "God's Great BIG World": Preschool Summer program sign ups are going on now! A $50.00 registration fee form will be sent out in the beginning of May. Our summer program begins Monday, 6/19 and runs through Friday, 7/28. See Mrs. Sara for more info.

    Graduation Pictures Wednesday, 5/3: Graduation pictures will take place on Wednesday, 5/3 starting at 9:00 am. This photo opportunity is for all children who are graduating from our preschool campus and moving on. Picture proofs and forms will be given out after the photos have been taken.

    Preschool and Elementary Art Show & Ice Cream Social Thursday, 5/11 from 6:00-8:00 pm: This is a fun night for friends and family to come and see our children's artwork displayed at the elementary school campus down by the Kindergarten classrooms, enjoy some ice cream and meet our great staff. We look forward to seeing you!

    Tea Volunteers Needed: Many volunteers are needed to hostess tables for our Mommy, Grammy and Me Tea on Friday, 5/12 at 10:00 am. Please see Ms. Sara or Miss Marlaina to sign up.

    Elementary School
    Congratulations to the students recognized in chapel today: Avery Espinoza, Kaeley Schuring, Asher Ollmann, Karsen Wesley, and Max Vandenberg.
    K - 3rd Multiage Class for 2017-18:  Current VCS family have priority for enrolling their student in the K-3rd grade Multiage Class until Monday, 5/1.  After this date, it will be opened up to families that are new to VCES. Space is limited.
    4th - 6th Multiage Class for 2017-18: If we receive enough additional interest in the upper multiage class we will expand the current program.  If you are interested in either class or would like more information regarding the Multiage Classrooms, please contact Karen Garcia at 562-920-9902.
    Standardized Testing, 4/24-4/28: will be held Monday, 4/24 through Friday, 4/28, for students in Grades 2-6. Please be sure students are well rested and eat a good breakfast. No interruptions will be made during the testing period.
    Kindergarten Observation Tour: We will host a Kindergarten Observation Tour at 8:30 am, on Thursday, 4/27. These tours are a wonderful way for prospective parents to visit our campus and focus on our Kindergarten program. They'll see teachers and students in action and explore specialty classes. Tours are available by reservation. Call Dianne, 562-860-0556, in the Business Office to join in.
    Speedometry: Valley Christian After School Science Club for grades K-6. Two classes are available for Wednesdays, 4/26, 5/3, 5/10, 5/17, and Thursdays, 4/27, 5/4, 5/11, 5/18 from 3:00-4:00 pm. Registration is open with a class size limit of 26. A digital copy of the registration form and information is available here. We hope this science program will inspire students to learn and marvel at God's handiwork in His creation.
    Talent Show (Grades 1-6) Friday, 4/28: The talent show will be held on Friday, 4/28 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the High School Chapel. If you have any questions, please contact Taelin at with the subject line "VCES Talent Show."

    Box Tops Contest Ends Friday, 4/28: The contest between the elementary classes to find out who can collect the most box tops is in full swing. Start asking relatives, friends, and members of church to help with collecting because the winning class will get a pizza party! Each Box Top square is worth 10 cents. 100% of the proceeds go to defray the cost of VCES 6th Grade Christian Science Camp.
    Spring Enrichment Classes: They will be held for five Tuesdays from 3:00-4:00 pm, 4/25-5/23. If your child would like to participate in a class, please fill out the form and return it to the office with your payment. Classes are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
     Volunteers are Needed: The Box Tops and Toner Cartridge Recycling program is in need of a coordinator for the upcoming 2017-2018 school year. This is a great way to get your service hours and can be done at home. If you are interested, please call the school office at 562-920-9902. We extend our appreciation and gratitude to Cheri Van Meeteren for serving in this position for the past seven years!
    Trot for Technology: Elementary students are seeking pledges or donations for the jog-a-thon fundraiser on Friday, 4/28 to raise $30,000 for classroom technology like iPads and Chromebooks. Make a pledge or donation at Donations will be accepted until Friday, 5/5. Parents, grandparents, etc. are welcome to cheer on or jog/walk with the kids. 
    Parent Service Hours Opportunities: 
    • We need 12 to 15 volunteers to assist with the Trot for Technology on 4/28 from 8:15 am-11:30 am.
    • 8-10 volunteers are also needed to count the final proceeds and prepare prizes on Friday, 5/5 from 8:30 am-2:30 pm. Contact Tracy Espinosa at if you are able help.
    • Volunteers needed for the VCES Art Show on Thursday, 5/11. We are looking for volunteers to assist with the Ice Cream Social which supports the elementary art program. Two shifts are available, from 5:30-7:00 pm, and 6:45-8:15 pm. Volunteers may contact Jennifer at

    Middle School  
    Secretary's Appreciation Week: This week, we get the chance to celebrate our VCMS secretaries: Mrs. Christine Aardema & Mrs. Beth Nyenhuis. Don't forget to stop by and thank them for keeping the middle school afloat. These two ladies represent the school and Jesus Christ unbelievably well!
    8th Grade Honors English: Students who are interested in taking Honors English as freshmen are eligible to take a placement test in order to qualify. The Honors English Placement Test is offered two different dates: Monday, 5/8 from 7:00-8:15 pm or Tuesday, 5/16 from 3:30-4:45 pm in VCHS Room B20. Please e-mail Mrs. Lee at if you plan to attend one of these testing opportunities. Bring a #2 pencil with you to the test.
    VCMS Photography: Do you have a digital camera that you would be willing to donate to the Middle School Photography class?  They can be dropped off at the MS office. For more information, please email Lois Flietstra at  
    7th Grade Earth Week Field Trips: There will be three consecutive field trips for 7th Grade for the dates of 4/26, 4/27 & 4/28 (Wed-Fri)  We will participate in a beach clean-up, take a tour of a water treatment facility and go on a nature hike in the Pasadena foothills. Although not necessarily in that order because of different groups, the trips are an opportunity to experience "Creation, Fall & Redemption". Permission slips and detailed information have been sent home with the students.
    VCHS Competitive 2017-2018 Robotics Team: The Epic Robotz, Team 4415, will hold an informational meeting for interested incoming and current VCHS students on Tuesday, 5/16 at 7:00 pm in Room B-18. Through hands-on mentoring of real world tasks, team members are better prepared for a career in several fields including business management, marketing, computer science and engineering. First Robotics Competition (FRC) students are eligible for more than $20 million in college scholarships. FRC considers this the “Varsity Sport of the Mind” and students that qualify can apply for a Varsity letter at the end of the season. Visit the team’s website for more info:

    VCMS Orientation & Study Skills (July 31 – Aug 4): Sign-ups are coming soon for a summer class that will help your student discover the best ways to succeed through organization, time management, study strategies, and much more. This orientation is a great place to learn more about VCMS and meet new people before the year even begins. Students will master opening their locker and even get their schedule. This class is intended for all 7th graders and new 8th graders. Families can choose the 8:00-10:00 am session or the 10:30 am - 12:30 pm session. Cost $80.

    High School
    Congratulations to our Jazz Bands who played well on Saturday at the Workman HS Jazz Festival.  Our beginning band got 3rd place in their division, and the advanced band took 1st place!
    Junior-Senior Banquet is on Friday, 4/28: Juniors and Seniors are dismissed at noon on Friday, 4/28. Students must be marked present in periods 1-4 in order to attend the Junior Senior Banquet Friday night.
    Athletic Boosters Scholarship Applications due on Friday, 5/4Parents of Senior Athletes, please encourage your student to pick up the scholarship applications that are available in the Verhoeven College and Career Center.
    Senior Play: The VCHS Class of 2017 proudly presents "The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood" (a comedy by Mary Lynn Dobson). Tickets will be sold from 5/1 through 5/12, in the high school office during regular school hours. Presale tickets are $8 and $10 at the door. Performances will take place at 7:30 pm on 5/12 & 5/13 at the Bellflower Civic Auditorium. We "Sherwood" love to see you there!

    Work on Grad Night Friday, 6/9: Double credit will be given for service hours for Grad Night and these hours can be used for next year. Shifts are 10:00 pm - 1:00 am or 1:00 - 4:00 am.     College Credit Available: VCHS is offering a Dual Enrollment Principles of Engineering college course this summer with Cerritos College. Students who take the course will receive 3 units of CSU transferable college credit and one year of high school credit at the completion of the course. The deadline to sign up for the course is Monday, April 24th.

    Driver Education Class: Students that are interested in taking a Driver Education class the week after school ends can pick up a flyer in the High School Office from Mrs. Bakker.
    Europe Trip: It's not too late to sign up for the trip of a lifetime, touring Britain, France, and Spain! If you and/or your children want to visit Europe in the summer of 2018, contact Mr. Rhodes at or students can stop by Mr. Rhodes' room, Mrs. Cortes' room or Mrs. Zoetewey's room to pick up a student invitation envelope with more information.     Middle School Cheer Meeting on 5/2: Parent meeting for all current sixth and seventh grade students interested in trying out for middle school cheer. Tuesday, 5/2 at 7:00 pm in the middle school library. We will discuss the cost, try-out procedure, time commitment and more.

    Affordable Treasures Spring Fling Anniversary Sale 4/26-4/29: This month marks the 20-year anniversary of Affordable Treasures. This thrift store supports Valley Christian Schools, Artesia Christian Home and Bethany Christian Services. Over half a million dollars in profits have been funded directly to our school! To celebrate God’s goodness for 20 years of faithful volunteers, all donors and shoppers are invited to the store to enjoy refreshments, fellowship and daily sales.     Camp Dunamis Camper registrations are due Monday, 5/15: Camp Registrations & Youth Counselors Needed for Camp Dunamis. It is a fun Christian camp for middle school youth. Campers must be entering 7th, 8th or 9th grade in the fall. Camp dates are Sunday, 6/18 - Friday, 6/23. It is an intentionally multi-racial camp that strives to help youth grow deeper in love with God and each other, bringing reconciliation to the places that often divide us.     K-6 Summer Camp: Los Altos Grace Brethren Church is offering a K-6 summer camp, No Compromise, which is based on 1 Corinthians 15:58.
