    We are thrilled to announce Brian Petteys has accepted the position as our Middle School Principal.  Brian stepped into the job as Interim Principal over the summer this year and we’re grateful he’s agreed to apply his talent and vision at this exceptional campus. Please congratulate Brian when you see him.
     
    Parent Association meeting on Tuesday, 11/14 at 7:00 PM in the Verhoeven College and Career Center. 
       
    Parent Association T-shirt/Polo Uniform Sale Thursday, 11/16 from 3:00 PM -5:00 PM  in Room 23 at the High School campus. Elementary T-shirts, White polos, and Sweatshirts will be available. 
     
    BOPA Christmas Program & Ad book - submissions are due by Friday, 11/17.  Advertise your business or send a message to your student.  Messages can be for students, offer praise and encouragement and can earn funds for future B & O trips. Order forms can be found at www.vcschools.org/bopa.
     
    Thanksgiving Worship Service & Food Drive:
    • Join us in a school-wide food drive for Long Beach Rescue Mission.  See the flier for suggested food donations.  Students may bring items to school any day through Friday, 11/17.
    • Parents and friends of VCS are invited to join all KCC - 12th grade students for worship on Friday, 11/17 from 1:30-2:15 PM in the High School gym. After worship, students will return to their own campuses and bus routes will run as usual.
    • Preschool students will participate in their own Thanksgiving celebration at their campus.
    No school the week of Thanksgiving - Monday through Friday, 11/20-11/24. Campus offices will be closed, and the Business Office will be open Monday and Tuesday.
     
    Broadway Showcase Auditions for Elementary and Middle School students will take place on Tuesday, 11/28. Please see the Broadway Showcase website: www.vcschools.org/broadway for times, audition forms, and additional information.
     
    Parent Service Hours Opportunity: Chaperone the Sadie Hawkins Dance on Saturday, 12/2. We need 6 parents to help around campus (outdoors) and in the parking lot from 7:00-11:00 PM. Contact Rebecca Snoeyink at rsnoeyink@vcschools.org.
     
    Parent Service Hours Opportunity: Help during the High School Teacher's Christmas Luncheon on Friday, 12/8 at 11:30 AM.     Lunch Bunch days for November: Your child may bring a lunch to enjoy with us from 11:30-11:55 AM. On the day of a scheduled Lunch Bunch, please let your child's teacher know that they will be staying until 11:55 AM.

    See's Candies Fundraiser: Order forms will be going home on Thursday, 11/16! Please support our preschool by purchasing See's Candies. All proceeds will go towards new outdoor equipment and toys! Orders are due Friday, 12/1.
     
    Thanksgiving Parade and Feast on Friday, 11/17 from 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM. All children and parents are invited to join us for this special Thanksgiving celebration. 
     
    Canned Food Drive: Our annual canned food drive is going on now! If you would like to donate canned food items that will be distributed to the Long Beach Rescue Mission please drop off before 11/17.

    Elementary School  
     
    Thanksgiving Break Daycare packets are still available online and in Daycare. The deadline has been extended.
     
    Box Tops Contest from 11/1 - 11/30: Who can collect and turn in the most Box Tops?  There will be a contest between elementary classes, and the winning class will get a pizza party! Start now--ask relatives, friends, and members of your church to help with collecting. Each Box Top square is worth 10 cents and it adds up fast. 100% of the proceeds go to defray the cost of VCES 6th grade Science Camp.
     
    Math Circle - the final meeting will be Tuesday, 11/14. For information, email Mrs. Hermann at lorherm@gmail.com Please complete the registration form and turn in to the office.
     
    The 5th & 6th grade students and Mrs. Koolmees' class will be going to watch the Middle School play, 'Wagon Wheels a-Rollin', on 11/15.
     
    Skatedogs Mobile Skateboard Park will be here 11/16 to give a demonstration for their upcoming class. Information and registration forms will be sent home that day. Class space is limited, early registration is recommended.
     
    Kindergarten & 3rd Grade Christmas Concert on Tuesday, 12/5 at 7:00 PM at Bethany CRC, Bellflower. Students should meet in the Friendship Center at 6:40 PM.
     
    Parent Volunteer Opportunity:  Help supervise the elementary playground during the Teacher's Christmas Luncheon on Wednesday, 12/6, from 11:30-12:30 PM.  Please contact the elementary office at 562-920-9902 if you can help. 
     
    Kids' Christmas Boutique is 12/11-12/15.  Volunteers are needed for morning and afternoon shifts to set up and assist students with shopping. To sign up, please contact Jennifer Adams at pa-vces@vcschools.org.
     
    5th & 6th Grade Band, Orchestra and Choir Christmas Concert on Wednesday, 12/13 at 10:00 AM at Bethany CRC, Bellflower.
     
    5th & 6th grade winter sports season is approaching and we are looking for coaches for both the boys basketball and girls volleyball teams.  Tryouts for the teams will take place Monday, December 18 - Wednesday, December 20, and the season will begin January 8 and continue through mid-March.  There is a coaching stipend for the season.  If you are interested or know someone who may be interested, please contact Tracy Espinosa at tracyrvh7@yahoo.com.

    Middle School  
      
    Middle School Play on Thursday, 11/16 and Friday, 11/17 at 7:00 PM. Come to the middle school chapel to see the rowdy performances of the play Wagon Wheels a-Rollin' by Tim Kelly. Tickets can be purchased at the VCMS office or at the door--student tickets are $3, and adult tickets are $5.
     
    Parent Service Hours Opportunity: The Middle School Play will take place Thursday and Friday, 11/16 and 11/17 at 7:00 PM.  We are looking for several parents each night to patrol the parking lot as security guards from 6:30 - 9:00 PM. Please call VCMS  685-6519 or email us vcmsoffice@vcschools.org if you are interested. 3 service hours will be given.
     
    Girls Volleyball and Boys Basketball tryouts will be Tuesday, 11/28 - Thursday, 11/30 from 3:00 to 4:45 PM.

    Reminder that Broadway Showcase Auditions for High School Students are taking place this week Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday! All High School students interested in being considered for a Solo, Duet, Small Group Number, or Men's or Women's Specialty MUST attend an audition! Students auditioning for a Solo, Duet, or Small Group Number will need to sign up for an audition time in the VCHS Music Room. Please check the Broadway Showcase website: www.vcschools.org/broadway for times, audition forms, and additional information.

    The EPIC ROBOTZ Open House/Show & Tell is on Saturday, 11/18 at 1:00 PM. Everyone is invited to attend! Each project team will have the opportunity to show off their hard work. Students and mentors have been learning new skills  to get ready for the competition season. As an added bonus you will have the opportunity to meet "THOR" our newest CNC machine. We think you will be impressed.
     
    Sadie Hawkins Dance is Saturday, 12/2. The dance will be on campus from 7:30-11:00 PM. Tickets are $15 and will be sold the week of 11/27 - 12/1 during lunch in the high school office. TICKETS WILL NOT BE SOLD AFTER LUNCH ON FRIDAY 12/1 OR AT THE DOOR.
    • All VCHS students must have the "Valley Student Dance Form" filled out in order to purchase tickets.
    • The "Dance Guest Pass" must be filled out in order to purchase a guest ticket.
    • Both of these forms can be found on the "High School Student" page in Canvas.
    Would you like to bless the Senior Class of 2018?  The Grad Night Committee is humbly requesting donations to help make Grad Night a huge success! Please consider donating any amount to our fund by 12/15 at the high school office.     Phase 1 of Event Center construction has begun!  This involves two new metal buildings that will replace our existing bus garage. 
    • The first small metal building will be located on the north end of the HS student parking lot. This will serve as the Maintenance Office and headquarters for all Bus Drivers.
    • The second building will be for storage and will be located just south of the HS baseball field.
    • Please pay attention to the parking and traffic signs on the Middle School campus as there will be days when parking at the MS will be limited.

    Band and Orchestra Parent Association will meet on Monday, 11/6 in the High School Music Room (C32) at 7:30 PM and they invite you to attend. Come be a part of the events and service hour opportunities they have planned for this year!
     
    Parent Service Hours Opportunity from 11/10 to 11/14: The Busines office is looking for 3 volunteers to help with a 3 - 4 hr. take-home project which involves envelopes - applying labels and inserting cards.  The job will be ready to pick up from the BO on Friday, 11/10  and to be returned by Tuesday, 11/14.  Please contact Patty Vander Molen if you are interested and available. pvandermolen@vcschools.org.

    Third Grade Charlotte's Web Performances on Wednesday, 11/8 at 2:00 PM.   Mrs. Lennon's class will perform in Room A and Mrs. Shiraki's class will perform in Room 2.
     
    Family and Friends of the 5th and 6th grade orchestras are invited to attend the Coffee Concerts on Thursday, 11/9. Come and enjoy music and refreshments in the VCES multi-purpose room while you hear the orchestras perform.
    • The 6th grade orchestra will perform from 10:10 AM to 10:40 AM.
    • The 5th grade orchestra will perform from 11:05 AM to 11:30 AM.
    Round 2 - Color Changing Slime & Geyser Risers: Valley Christian After School Science Club for grades K-6. Two classes are available for Wednesdays, 11/8, 11/15, 11/29, 12/6 and Thursdays, 11/9, 11/16, 11/30, 12/7 from 3:00-4:00 PM. Registration is open with a class size limit of 26.     Due to unforeseen circumstances, the VCES Family Fun Night for Friday, 11/10 has been cancelled. Information on a new family fun night for Jan. 2018 will come later this year.

    The Scholastic Arts Society (SAS) invites parents of 9th-12th graders to their meeting on Monday, 11/6 at 7:00 PM in the Verhoeven College and Career Center (located in the Student Services Building.) Service hours are available, and this group provides a way to support student clubs and help with the annual awards ceremony.
     
    Senior Parents - The Josten's Rep will be on campus on Friday, 11/10 at lunch time so that they can record measurements for caps and gowns, the cost of which was already covered in senior fees.  The Josten's Rep was on campus last week and handed out order forms.  If your family would like to order other graduation items (ie. custom tassels, announcements, etc.) order forms can be handed in to Jostens at that time. 
     
    Applications for Broadway Showcase 2018 Student Director and Student Production Team are due by the end of the day this Friday, 11/10! Any students interested in being considered must submit an application to The CAST at info.thecast@gmail.com. Applications and all other interview & audition information can be found on the Broadway Showcase website at www.vcschools.org/broadway
     
    Still thinking about dropping a class? VCHS has staggered drop dates.
    • If you drop a class by the end of Week 13 (11/10), then there is a W on your permanent transcript, but it doesn't hurt your GPA.
    • If you drop a class after Week 13 (11/10), then you get an automatic F on your permanent transcript, and it will pull your GPA down.
    • Download a drop form at (www.vcschools.org/registrationforms).
    Service Learning Homeless Breakfasts on Saturday 11/11 at 6:30 AM- On the second Saturday of each month we team with our friends at Kingdom Causes and Calvary Baptist Church (14722 Clark Ave, Bellflower) to prepare, serve and eat breakfast with some of our homeless neighbors. VCHS students, parents and graduates are welcome. Service hours are available for students and parents. Please contact Jeff Westrup at jwestrup@vcschools.org if you have any questions!
