FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL®)
Our Elementary and Middle School teams compete in FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL®): a Sport For The MindTM. It allows young people, grades 4 through 8, to discover science and technology in a fun, creative, hands-on learning environ- ment while building self-confidence, knowledge, and valuable career and life skills. FLL® challenges kids to think like scientists and engineers. Paired with adult mentors, FLL® teams solve real world problems using engineering con- cepts, presentation techniques, and robots.
Your student will apply math and science concepts in order to research, design, build and program autonomous robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology. They’ll work as a group to overcome obstacles and meet challenges while applying the FLL® Core Values. They’ll also learn to make posi- tive contributions to society and connect with their fellow VCS, church and neighborhood communi- ties.
Each team is expected to compete in a Qualifier Tournament where they’ll present their solutions to a panel of judges as well as compete with their robot against other teams. During the Qualifier, the teams will be judged on how well they interact with each other using FLL’s Core Values, how well they’ve done on the robot challenge, robot design and how their project can really impact the world around them. Teams that successfully advance are eligible for the Southern California Region tour- nament which is held at LEGOLAND.

COACHES & MENTORS
Involvement of Coaches and Mentors is essential to the growth of our Robotics students. FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL®) creates powerful relationships between the students and the positive adult role models who participate.
Coaches and Mentors do not need to know how to program a robot or come with any technical ex- perience; the students receive training and do all of the work. As a Coach/Mentor you will be able to offer valuable research, presentation, project management guidance, and administrative team sup- port.
Coaches and Mentors can be parents, grandparents, teachers, and corporate professionals (technical or non-technical). If you have the passion to empower our students with a sense of accomplishment and are inspired and energized through their participation, then the job is right for you.
